What is Occupational Therpay (OT)

Occupational Therapy is a client centred health profession concerned with promoting health and wellbeing through occupation. The primary goal of Occupational Therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life.

Children’s Occupational Therapy is focused on how the child manages their everyday activities of play, learning and self-care (feeding, dressing, toileting) in essence their “occupation”. The aim of Children’s Occupational Therapy is to support and enhance the child’s participation in these activities to the best of their ability at home, school and with in their wider community. Children’s Occupational Therapy strives to enable each child experience a sense of accomplishment and success in their activities of daily living , fostering a sense of well-being and positive self-worth.

We provide assessment and intervention for children and adolescents with various diagnosis such as;

  • Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Dyspraxia
  • Down Syndrome
  • Attention Disorders (ADD, ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Neurological Conditions (Cerebral Palsy, Various Syndromes etc.)
  • Learning Difficulties

We also provide assessment and intervention for children and adolescents who do not have a diagnosis but may be experiencing functional difficulties in their daily life, e.g. dressing, handwriting, coordination, organisational skills, attention and play skills. 

We  use  various evidence based therapeutic approaches within our intervention. Utilising both Top Down and Bottom Up approaches. Therefore we treat both the underlying cause of the difficulties as well as addressing specific functional skills.

This includes both the neurological foundations of function  (such as sensory processing) and functional abilities (like playing with friends) and quality of life factors (such as having a peaceful home life).

Hand in Hand Children’s Occupational Therapy Centre Intervention

Our strong family centered ethos incorporates the following:

  • We empower parents! Parents can participate in our intervention sessions when appropriate so they have an understanding of what we are doing which in turn empowers parents to support their child’s needs during the natural course of daily life.
  • We educate and support parents to develop strategies to support their child at home and in daily life activities.
  • We use an intensive model of intervention.   Recent research definitively shows that frequent repetition is needed to make brain and behavioural changes.
  • We use measurable goals agreed with parents e.g. Goal Attainment Scaling
